Highlights: Corporate Compliance & Transparency - Zurich, Switzerland

Here are some highlights from a very deep dive at the 3rd Annual Corporate Compliance and Transparency Conference in Zurich.

  • Czech Republic addressing disclosure requirements in a challenging "promotional" environment; taking a regional leadership approach from which neighboring countries can benefit as they address transparency in their locale.

  • Great interactive brainstorming session on defining a corporate transparency vision - local, regional, global. Legislation will drive local deviations from a top-down regional or global standard. Comprehensive, anticipatory data collection is a leading practice.

  • US Sunshine Act overview - although there are some EU parallels (multiple :states with different laws and rules), the language, culture, and currency differences make regional efforts such as EFPIA very challenging

  • Reinforcing a Compliance Culture - much like the challenges in implementing total quality management programs, organizations strive to find the true "value proposition" for a compliance culture. Also a good look at changing organizational behavior to achieve compliance objectives

  • Consistent focus on anti-bribery and anti-corruption in Europe versus the affordable care focus in the US

  • Excellent primers on the UK Anti-Bribery Act and the Compliance Officer as consultant, partner, and facilitator as opposed to the corporate-cop-on-the-beat.

  • 3rd Party Governance - ensuring firms are using leading practices for managing and monitoring 3rd party interactions

A well spent immersion into the issues, challenges and approaches to achieving continuous improvement in promotional spend transparency and compliance in pharmaceutical manufacturers (with applicability to medical devices and the broader category of life sciences).
